Power figures have been a staple on professional wrestling shows for years. The WWF used Jack Tony as its fictional boss before the company’s real-life president, Vince McMahon, took over on-screen as well. Meanwhile, World Championship Wrestling president Eric Bischoff brought his role backstage to WCW TV, serving as a quirky authority figure in Monday Nitro. The concept was implemented throughout 2010, with World Wrestling Entertainment bringing everyone from Mike Adamle to a laptop to top their programming, while promotions like Total Nonstop Action and Ring of Honor would use the likes of Mick Foley and Jim Cornette, respectively.
Today, on-screen wrestling authority figures are rare. WWE first started discontinuing the concept in December 2018, and longtime NXT General Manager William Regal earlier this year effectively released the company’s authority figures altogether. However, this does not mean that they are completely absent from professional wrestling.
At All Elite Wrestling, Tony Kahn is publicly known as the company’s co-owner, president, CEO, and general manager. Even with all of these titles, Khan works pretty hard behind the scenes.
Talking to Ariel HalawaniKhan noted that he rarely appears on television because he sees himself as a “machine”.
